His For Makes The News.....

His Four singers enliven Englewood

On the heels of a successful Saturday evening concert at Punta Gorda's Church of God of Prophecy, Florida's gospel quartet, His Four, presented a special musical service at Gulf Cove's United Methodist Church to a sanctuary crowded with fans of all ages.

"I just love them!" declared Jerri McCarthy. "My grandson, Cody Patterson, and I saw them last year and can't wait to hear them again."

Young Cody was too shy to say a word but rapidly shook his head up and down in agreement.

"They have a wonderful sense of humor when they perform and they sound so beautiful," added Dale Martin. Her son, Joseph Lamitie, bought a His Four tape last year. Martin plays it all the time and enjoys each song so well, she doesn't have a particular favorite.

"O What a Time," the group's ninth recording, features several songs introduced during Sunday's concert; copies were sold in the vestry and are available at Gospel Gifts in Port Charlotte.

His Four began its odyssey in 1990 as a part-time musical ministry. The group now performs more than 50 concerts per year, even though its members hold down full-time jobs: tax accounting, cabinetry, electrician and funeral home director.

Lead vocalist Jim Reuter and rumbly-voiced bass Larry Taylor helped form the group in 1990. Reuter's wife of 29 years, Cheryl, began singing tenor in 1991 and baritone Dan Serrell joined three years ago.

His Four recently won 2002 Gospel Post Fan Awards (Florida Gospel Music Association): Mixed Group of the Year; Alto Vocal of the Year (Cheryl Reuter); Baritone Vocal of the Year (Jim Reuter); Sound Technician of the Year (Terry Merriman, His Four technician for the past three years).

His Four presented a special children's message in song to the church's youngsters, then sang nearly a dozen gospel hymns in every imaginable rhythm and harmony. Their message was universally upbeat, their voices lyrical and the audience responded with applause, toe-tapping and swaying to the rhythms.

"We like to be cognizant of the more mature audience we have in Charlotte County," offered Cheryl Reuter Sunday morning. "They really like us because we don't blow off their ears and we also sing a great variety of music. They like to buy our tapes and play them again and again. We genuinely believe in our musical ministry. People tell us how much comfort and peace our music gives them, but it's a real blessing for us, too."
